What a way to start the season!

The 2009 Warrior National Showcase came to an exciting end as some of the region's top AAA teams battled for the prestigious tournament title. This annual event – which was held on August 27-30 – featured 28 teams from four age divisions ('96, '97, '98 and '99). Here are the divisional summaries.

In one of the most exciting championship games, the Neponset Valley River Rats outlasted the Mancheser Flames by a score of 1-0 to capture the '96 division title. The eventual game-winning goal came with 47 seconds left in the first period. Andrew Whelan, off assists from Sam Topham and Billy Moore, lit the lamp to give his team a one-goal edge... one that would hold through the remaining two periods. Despite offensive pressure from the Flames, the River Rats held on for the exciting victory. The Neponset Valley River Rats scored three times in the second period to help them to a 4-1 semifinal win over the Dual State Huskies. Sam Topham, Dylan Casserly and Matt Doherty found the back of the net for the River Rats in that critical second stanza. The Huskies’ Connor Maguire put his team on the board at the 12:57 mark of the third period, but the River Rats had an answer as Andrew Whelan put an explanation point on his team’s victory by netting the game’s final goal with three minutes remaining in regulation.
